Top 3 Best 20 Volt Battery Sanders

What Real People Are Saying About The BLACK+DECKER BDCMS20C

Good but needs small design tweak
  • ZD - May 3, 2018

I bought this sander because I wanted the extra battery for my other tools and the price was right to basically get the sander for free compared to the battery alone. Now that I have it, I think I'll find plenty of uses for it.

My initial findings are pretty positive so far. The unit is small and light, but still feels powerful enough for the application. It seems well built for a lower end tool. Some other reviews touch on this and they are correct, this comes with a pretty low capacity battery so it won't run for a really long time between charges... Not that big of a deal to me considering how I use it.

My two biggest complaints are design flaws. The whole appeal of a detail sander is that it is compact and nimble. The location of the battery makes this unit a fair amount larger than the corded type (most you hold from the top right about the sanding head). This doesn't make the unit bad by any means, but I think I would prefer the smaller one for some tight situations. The second thing is that the dust port and battery are too close. I think it's harder to use with a vacuum than the traditional corded ones are because of this.

On the positive side, this sander goes on sale alot on Amazon making it incredibly affordable. The unit is obviously more home owner grade, but since it's a detail tool anyways it's not meant to be abused. This seemed like a good time to get the cheaper tool and save the money to buy a contractor grade item for something else. Overall I've been happy with it.

Good Sander, One Issue

Of all the 20v Black and Decker tools I have, this is the only one that gives me problems. It is still a good tool, does as it is supposed to. However, on occasion the tool will refuse to turn on. It is not the battery. It's an odd, fickle, finicky machine at times and I've not yet figured out why. I'll press the on button and nothing will happen. I'll turn it off and back on, sometimes that gets it to work. Sometimes I have to lightly tap it, and it will start right up. Still other times I'll turn it on, it wont work and I'll set it on my workpiece and it starts up unexpectedly. Not turning on when the on switch is pressed occurs maybe 40% of the time. Not a dealbreaker, however I do fear the tool will one day soon refuse to turn on at all. But as it is, it's a convenient tool that allows you to get to hard to reach areas where a cord would be a hassle or would get in the way.

A nice little tool

I was not aware when I purchased this item that there are apparently different size models of this sander. I bought what seems to be the smallest. Finding the correct sandpaper for it can be challenging, so be aware of what you are ordering. They only provide 2 pieces of sandpaper with it. The performance is ok for small jobs where the pointed end permits access to small areas. The dust bag is helpful, but prolific dust is inevitable. Battery life is good for small to medium projects. You'll want a corded one if you will be sanding continuously for more than an hour.

Love that it's cordless!

Great sander. Plenty of power. I love that it's cordless. Actually thinking about getting some of the other Black and Decker 20V cordless tools after purchasing this one.

Works Very Well

I had a large project and my 120V (corded) Dewalt 1/4 sheet sander was getting old. So I decided to buy this sander. It worked great, and I loved the lack of an electrical cord since I was working outside.

Two things that kept me from giving a 5-star rating. First, the battery goes down quicker than I expected (luckily I bought a spare battery, and I had my old Dewalt as a backup). Second, the on/off switch was more difficult to operate (when turning on only) than I liked. With these two exceptions, this was a really good product for the money.
