Top 10 Best Benchtop Sanders

What Real People Are Saying About The WEN 6502T

Great Sander with a little mod

I purchased this a couple of months ago for use primarily in sanding the 1/4" thick tops and bottoms of Shaker oval boxes that I make. I have a larger Delta Sanding Center, but I wanted something smaller to more easily control the more delicate box parts. For the price, I have not been disappointed! I looked at every sander out there in this price range - I even went to a HF store and looked at their $60 model. The WEN is far superior. the disc and belt run true - no wobble at all - and the unit is quite heavy. There's a lot of thick metal here! What I don't like about this sander is what all of the sanders in this price range suffer from - flimsy tables and poor miter gages. I'm probably too picky with this, but I want a nice solid surface that doesn't move when I'm sanding. Because nearly all of what I'm doing involves 90 degree sanding, I decided to make my own table. I bolted the WEN to a plywood base, and using some scrap cabinet-grade plywood, made a table that is solid, exactly 90 degrees to the disc, and can be adjusted to get as close to the disc as I need it to be. See the photos. With this little mod, I have a perfect sander. Whereas I liked it before, I love it now!! If I ever need to sand at an angle, I can just put the table back on (but beware, the angle gage for the table is made of tape and is very inaccurate!), or go to my big Delta. If you're planning on doing mostly 90 degree work, give this mod a try - it'll make a really good sander into a great one, at a really good price. As for the miter gage - it's loose fitting, just like others in this price range. Hope this helps...

Great, except for the tiny safety guard it comes with.

Solid product for DIY garage user. I replaced the 6" disc already and found that whatever adhesive was used on the factory one was awful to clean off to prepare the surface for a replacement disc. The machine is the same as the Ryobi Bench Sander Green BD4601G one at Home Depot, but with WEN labeling. One big disappointment I had was the belt guard on top regarding how small and limited it was compared to the Ryobi model's guard. After I watched my son almost stick his finger in the the danger spot where the belt meets the machine, I promptly looked up the model number for the Ryobi guard and bought it to replace the junky WEN guard. For $12, I was able to replace it with this one: WORK REST RYOBI - RIDGID BD46054. It fits perfect since the machines are identical. Money well spent. I do wonder, however, whether I could've saved myself the headache and just purchased the Ryobi one from Home Depot. I recommend any WEN engineers consider the safety upgrade.

I am a retired carpenter, cabinetmaker and woodworker of the highest quality and experience. I have worked for the best shops and used the finest machines and the most powerful ever made for woodworking production of all types during my years working in custom woodworking shops. Now retired I still do woodworking in my garage and have some very big name machines such as Jet drill press, Powermatic hollow chisel mortising machine, Grizzly band saw and Woodpecker 2 Hr router table of very good quality. But I was in need of a belt and disk sander but size and space was a very big consideration in my purchase decision. This little combo belt and disk sander is GREAT! For the price and size it is excellent. Due its iron construction and WEIGHT it is extremely stable and taking in consideration of the motors size and power one can't use it like a bigger and more powerful type of sander but within its capability it does a Great Job. It has handled all my needs and I couldn't be more delighted. I have heard comments on the little table and its guide but it is what it is and if handled correctly with the proper Skills needed it does any job just fine.

Excellent quality for an excellent price

I hunted around quite a bit for a sander before settling in on this WEN.

There are several companies around selling this same machine with a wide variety of price.

The only downside to this is what I was expecting. The table is flimsy, guage is not real accurate and the 'finish' isn't great. But what can you expect for a 20 pound cast iron sander?

I'm building a custom table as I noticed another user did and i'm stealing his idea :). he's got pics and he had a great idea bolting the sander to what looks like a 1" plywood boar then building a little table.

The other item I expected to be weak is the included belt and disc. They're very cheap but you can't expect to get expensive consumables. It's just nice they included them. I already had belts and discs ordered and delivered before I got it. I did decide to leave the included belt on so I could track it in and do some tests, but the tracking wheel works great and it seems to stay true as you work.

Just remember not to press too hard which is easy to do.

Overall I'm very pleased with this. The only real change I'd hope for is a little more attention to dust control. I plugged in my shop vac to the port which fit nicely. But if you're sanding on the top, dust flies between the top plate and the base while working. For me I just hung a shop towel off the edge to keep it dropping instead of dusting up the bench, but it's not required. The shop vac connector works great, and it makes a big difference. I've got asthma so i try to keep things relatively clean. I expected to need to use a mask like I do when I use my hand held orbital or sanding manually, but with the shop vac connected and the towel pointing the sawdust down i didn't find a need to use a mask at all.

great little sander. Just know up front it's not an industrial unit, it's great for the hobbiest though.

Broken drive belt

This is a good sander that seems to be built well where it counts, however my cog drive belt has broke within the first week of using it and I'm not sure where to find a replacement.

They shipped me out a replacement belt for free and it's running fine again
