What Real People Are Saying About The Cubitron 28502

Awesome tool, better than expected!

I purchased this sander to work with solid surface counter tops. I'm a professional remodeller, and occasionally need to repair or re-purpose Corian countertops. Recently, I needed to take an old kitchen top that had several scratches in it, and re-work it to be used in a classroom with two small sinks. I started by using my Festool 5" electric ro sander with 80 grit, working through to 180 grit. That got the scratches out. I then switched to this 3M 6" air sander, using Mirka paper/pads. I worked from 220 grit up to P3000 grit, starting out dry, then adding water for the final grits, and the finish was perfect! As soon as I started using the 3M sander, I knew I was going to love it! There was practically no vibration (I have the 3/16" orbit model), it fits well in my hand, and it glided smoothly over the Corian, both dry and wet. Next time, I'm skipping the Festool and using the 3M for ALL the grits. It's smoother, lighter, and quieter! I had planned on purchasing rubbing compounds and buffer wheels for my electric buffer to get a higher gloss, but the customer was happy with the sheen I achieved with going to P3000 grit with the 3M sander. Happy customer, and I saved $$$. One thing, though, the Mirka discs are not oversize at all, so you have to line them up perfectly on the backing pad, or you'll have some of the "hooks" showing, which will wear them down and might scratch the surface you're working on. The 3M's look oversized in the videos, but my local painter's supply didn't stock the grits I wanted. The counter guy suggested the Mirka brand, which I am already familiar with from the woodworking I do. They performed very well on the Corian, so now I can stock the same brand in my shop for both wood and Corian.

This does what I wanted it more. I have another model. One for tight orbit, 5/64ths (i think). The other has a much larger orbit. The vacuum attachment reduces dust to nearly nothing. I set up plastic just find out how much dust and was happy the little clean up i had.

maks my job easy

How much wood does a wood chuck......

Even though the sander I received was an obvious return (broken packaging, dusty, dirty). This is a great sander. I chose the 5/16 hoping for a sander that can rapidly remove wood without damage. This thing eats it up. At about 1/5 the weight of my Festool, I know I will be using this alot. I think I'll add on of the less aggressive ones to go with it for final clean up.

Great tool if you have the proper compressor

I purchased to sand 64 wood ceiling beams (over 1500 sq ft of wood) I had it powered by a makita big bore gasoline compressor and attached to a milwaukee 3 stage vacuum. It worked flawlessly. This tool needs a high volume of compressed air to work properly/continuously. Dont bother purchasing unless you have a significant compressor to run it. Read the required specs...

What Real People Are Saying About The Cubitron 28514

Excellent strip sander

3M provides a professional tool with good ergonomics for all-day use in a production environment. I've used the 6" Cubitron Elite 3/32" orbit DA, and the 3" 1/8" orbit pistol as well, 3 years in automotive refinishing with hardly any maintenance beyond occasional oil and still perfect low-noise function. This 3/8" sander is great when you need something that will strip a panel down to bare metal without wasting time, but still be able to accurately feather out multiple layers of a coating and not cause damage. The exact same unit was provided by the aerospace facility I work in, and they are ancient tools that still function well.

High quality, great performance

This sander if fantastic. It's light weight, it's much shorter than an electric sander so your hand is much closer to the sanded surface, therefore more control and less wrist strain. It has a thumb dial to adjust its speed (for right handed people) which gives added sanding control. The self generating vacuum is incredibly strong. I would prefer a longer hose to move the bag away from the work area, but that can be purchased separately. Even though the sander uses a moderate amount of air (cfm), make sure you have a good compressor if you plan to sand for extended periods, otherwise it could damage your compressor.

Great sander. For working with wood

Great sander. For working with wood, at least, it doesn't need too much air. Get the version with the venturi. Instead of using the bags, the venturi lets me use an open-ended 4-foot hose that drops the sawdust to the floor (which I vacuum daily) without throwing it into the air. I don't need to run the vac or even wear a mask when using this sander. It's pricey, but a good case of "you get what you pay for."

Great sander

This works well! I have a 5 CFM compressor that is sufficient. The best part is that I get no wrist pain from using this sander unlike the pains I get from a electric sander. I can use this for an hour or more without fatigue. The electric one it replaced caused fatigue and wrist pain within 10 minutes.

much better dust pickup

Should have made the move from electric random orbit to air years ago. Much cooler running, much better dust pickup, much lighter weight. Love it. Be sure your air compressor is big enough. I'd guess if yours is 2 HP or less you can forget it. Tool does use a lot of air, and sanding is usually a long-term continuous operation.
