Top 10 Best Festool Sanders

What Real People Are Saying About The Festool 574993

Great Product
  • Doug - December 21, 2017

I know that Festool products are quite pricey for the average woodworker like myself. Trust me, this tool is worth the investment. I recently finished a counsel top made from 7/4 pine and was disappointed to find that once I applied stain, there were several swirl marks created from the Dewalt and Rigid orbital sanders used. Many people have opinions as to how swirl marks are created but after purchasing the Festool, I personally believe it has to do with the “sanding stroke” of the tool and using quality sandpaper. This sander has a 5/64 sanding stroke which is smaller
/ shorter compared to Dewalt and Rigid. Once sanded with the Festool sander using grits 80-220 the swirl marks have disappeared and I was able to restain the top with excellent results. I need to mention this by no way replaces a larger sander like a Festool RO 150 but with the budget conscious in mind, this tool will work just fine.

By no means am I saying that Dewalt and Rigid tools are inferior as I have several Dewalt Tools in my shop. However, the ease of use, quality and results speak for itself. There possibly are better Dewalt and Rigid sander models out there but I feel the Festool is superior compared to what I used. I should mention I researched the Bosch high end orbital sander before purchasing the Festool. The price was similar, however I found that separate Festool accessories were better quality and cheaper than Bosch. For example, the current price of the Festool portable HEPA, anti static dust collector was cheaper than purchasing a Bosch vacuum and then purchasing the HEPA filter and anti static hose that doesn’t come with the base model Bosch.

Anyway, pardon my trailing off, the Festool ETS 125 is an excellent sander that is lightweight (perfect for vertical sanding) and has plenty of power. The small sanding stroke leaves no swirl marks and will provide a excellent finish with less effort. You won’t be disappointed.

Expensive but well worth it.

Yes, it's pricey, but for a couple hundred bucks, you get a sander that not only sands beautifully (smooth with no swirls if your technique is right), but is also quiet (relatively), extremely clean (with a vacuum attached) and will not numb your hands from using it for an extended period. I've used a lot of hand-held power sanders, and this one is tops in my book. Well worth the money IMO. BTW, I hook up my Rigid shop vac with a Bosch hose Bosch VAC005 5-Meter Vacuum Hose 35mm and the setup works very well.

No more clouds of sanding dust in the air!

I wanted a sander that didn't spew clouds of fine dust in the air as my Porter Cable ROS does. I'd spoken to a couple of people who own/use Festools sanders and swear by them. The one factor that held me back was the high cost of the Festool "dust extractors" which would have a hose designed to plug into the ETS 125 but figured I should be able to cobble up something that would work with my new sander. Once the sander arrived I discovered that the fitting on the business end of the hose for my Shop Vac slid right over the dust connection on the sander. A bit loose, but I figured I'd be able to wrap a few turns of tape around the sander's connection, but found that wouldn't be necessary as once the vacuum is turned on the hose gets sucked onto the sander and has never come off when using the sander even on vertical or overhead surfaces. There's no dust in the air that I can detect when using the sander, and very little left on the surface being sanded. The sander comes with an edge guard, but I've foiund that it's not normally required since the orbit of this sander/s pad is quite small and it doesn't pound on an adjacent edge. The only downside of this sander is the price of the disks from Festool and there appear to not be any competing brands available for the sander. Reviews that I've read indicate that the Festool paper lasts longer than most other brands of paper. Festool paper is typically found in 50 or 100 packs, at a bit over 60 cents per disk, some grits appear to be available in 10-packs at more than twice the per-disc price. Overall very favorably impressed by the sander, wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a friend.

Good professional quality tool.

I resisted spending two to three times more on a random orbit sander but I have experienced too much downtime with conventional brands and took the plunge. This tool even as an entry level festool sander is so far above the BoschPortercableDewaltetc set that I am regretting waiting so long. This sander actually cuts rapidly but with greater control. It’s magic. And while some may be annoyed that the hole pattern is different and paper is not as readily obtained, I believe the dust pickup with the more outboard hole pattern is indeed more efficient.
