Top 10 Best Makita Sanders

What Real People Are Saying About The Makita XOB01Z

Great product with trade offs
  • Pops - December 30, 2016

I've been using finishing and random orbital sanders for 30+ years and they keep getting better. This one is no exception. The fact that you no longer have to tango with a cord makes it worth it. On most sanding jobs I'm constantly looking for more cord or trying not to drag it across my project and now I don't have to worry about that. However, with all of my sanders I've grown accustomed to being able to change my grip for fatigue and mostly tool angle management. With this one your choices are a little more limited due to the battery. Also it's a bit unwieldy because of the extra weight, but both draw backs are more than made up for by battery power. At full speed a 6ah battery will last around 40 minutes.

Cordless!! Great tool

Uses 8 hole hook and loop 5” disks. I find them to be the most common type available at local hardware stores. The sander is powerful and has a large orbital oscillation pattern of ⅛” (3mm). Having 3 speeds is nice but it can feel like it’s slow even on the fastest setting. It’s moving a little slower than most corded sanders but the sandpaper will still cut fast with the large orbital pattern. In fact, I use higher grit in this sander than I do in faster corded sanders. The hook and loop pad is very flat on mine. The very flat pad and the slower orbital oscilation can make higher grit sanding pads grab your base material more and the sander can feel a little difficult to control if using much pressure. I’ve found using light pressure gives me the most control and even using two hands with light pressure works really well for control. Even with the slightly different technique from my corded sander I find this Makita to be very useful and surprisingly good. It runs very quiet for a sander and even though it sounds slow, it is efficient and cuts fast. I use it with a cordless vac and the dust collection is great. I usually remove the dust bag from the dust port adapter and my vac hose fits in the bag’s place. I temporarily tape the hose in place. I do think I will buy Makita’s hose adapter for their sanders to use with this one. The dust bag does a good job but as with any sander indoors, it will get dust everywhere without a vacuum dust collector.
I hope this review is helpful.

Excellent Small Rotary Sander

I have several Makita 18 VDC cordless tools, and have been impressed with their quality, functionality & durability. This rotary sander proved to be the same high level of performance as the others I own.

Before ordering it, I wondered where the battery would fit, as you can't tell for sure from the picture. The battery slides in vertically, in front of the dust pouch.

Although physically small, this sander operates very effectively in its three speeds (7,000 / 9,500 / 11,000 rpm).

could use a little more juice..

I am starting to sense a pattern with my makita 18v tools. They all seem to run slower than my older dewalt 18v tools. They all do seem to be a little more refined than the dewalt, but between this sander and my new jig saw, both act like they are running at half speed. The sander does want to jump around a little and is harder to control because it is going slower. Beyond that, I like the tool and does the job.

works great but make sure you get the 5 amp battery ...

works great but make sure you get the 5 amp battery for it. the three amp only last about 30 minutes of continuous use.

Aside from the tools we reviewed above, I would definitely take a look at the BO5041K by Makita and the 9903 by Makita. Both Makita and Makita are famous for their top quality Sanders. Each of these particular options enjoy great buyer reviews also. Users gave the Makita an average rating of 4.7/5 stars. Compare that to the Makita 9903 that holds an average score of 4.6/5 stars.

The BO5041K by Makita comes with a couple of features you wont get on competing Random Orbital Sanders. One example is Smooth and fast sanding with 3.0 AMP motor. The 9903 by Makita by comparison, is very competitive with Powerful 8.8 AMP motor; only 85dB plus Variable speed control dial (690-1,440 ft./min.) enables user to match the speed to the application.

I would be eager to suggest either of these Makita Sanders
